3 Unsettling Malayalam Movies

It's only been three months into 2023, and I've watched 3 Malayalam movies that went from What the fuck is going on? to Bloody hell!!??. If 'never let them know your next move' is a movie, it would've been these three.

From a slow-paced screenplay, these films spiral into strange yet disconnected events that finally make sense towards the end. The movie titles are especially deceiving; they aren't what you think they are.

 There's an unreliable narrator with a hero complex who's an absolute asshole, and then there are different storylines happening parallelly, and through cause and effect, they get interlinked over the course of time.

 The films also give you a reality check on morals in a very subtle manner; how you won't always have it your way, and sometimes, there's no right or wrong; it's all about winning. Starting off with gut-wrenching suspense, there comes a turning point in each of these movies, and from there on, it's just chaos. The biggest question is what genre they fall into. Crime thriller? Maybe. Satire? Definitely. Dark Humour? Absolutely. 

 All of these are sinister in nature, there are silhouettes, and shadow plays more like a slow-burn horror than a jump scare. The composition, framing, use of lights, everything adds to the film's nuances. But are they the same? Are the acts of the protagonist justified? Absolutely not! And that's the beauty of them all. These movies are only similar in how they make you feel; one word: unsettling.
